Upplands Lokaltrafik

Upplands Lokaltrafik is responsible for public transport in the county of Uppsala. Our task is to coordinate schedules and prices, and to procure traffic services offered by independent operators. UL also engages in public transit marketing and awareness activities.

The company is jointly owned by Uppsala County and municipalities within the county (Älvkarleby, Tierp, Östhammar, Uppsala, Knivsta, Enköping, Heby and Håbo)

UL's board of directors is elected for a four year term and nominated by the Regional Council of Uppsala. Upplands Lokaltrafik's chairman is Fredrik Ahlstedt.

Our vision

"UL offers such great travel options that everyone wants to be a customer."

Because UL has successfully created a tailored selection of travel options, Uppland residents leave their cars at home and travel with UL traffic whenever this possible and appropriate. Customers say that they receive good service, and that traveling with UL is easy, reliable and safe. We make everyday life easier for everyone who needs to travel in our region.

Our efforts to involve partners, such as transit companies, owners, etc. in the development of customer relationships has helped us free up and harness the power that contributes towards UL's ever-increasing number of passengers. In the industry-wide public transit survey, UL is among the highest rated transit services in the country.

The initiatives regarding fossil fuel alternatives developed by UL in collaboration with owners and external partners have helped make public transit the clear forerunner in terms of sustainable travel options.

Our activities in brief

  • More than 12 million trips were made with Regiontrafiken, regional buses and Upptåget in 2008.
  • Every weekday, UL's Regiontrafiken travels a distance equivalent to 1.5 times around the world.
  • A total of 250 buses and 10 trains are used for Regiontrafiken services.
  • Approximately 900 employees work at UL's Regiontrafiken, distributed among a number of contractors.
  • Almost 58% of UL's costs for bus and train services are covered by ticket revenue.  The remaining costs are covered by tax revenue in the form of shareholder contributions from UL's owners.
  • Total Regiontrafiken sales amounted to SEK 688 million in 2008.

  • Collaboration is key

We work with our contractors and partners in the region to develop our joint business venture - our public transport system. We take an active role in this cooperation.

UL procures all traffic services from contractors, with Nobina as the largest among them. The contractor is compensated for the services provided in accordance with the contract signed at the time of procurement. The contracts are usually valid for 5 years with the option of an additional five-year extension.
